The Avery County Planning Board consists of seven members who are appointed by the Avery County Board of Commissioners for a term of three years. The Planning Department submits plans for subdivisions to the Planning Board for recommdations as to approval or disapproval. Then the Planning Board makes a recommendation to the Avery County Board of Commissioners concerning the subdivision. The Planning Board consists of the following members:

The Planning Board meetings are held on the last Monday of each month, unless otherwise posted, at 5:30 p.m. in the Avery County Commissioners Board Room located in the Administration Building. The Planning Board looks at the plans that have been submitted and recommends to the Board of Commissioners whether to approve or disapprove the plans.
