The Solid Waste Office maintains landfills and material recovery sites throughout Avery County.

The Solid Waste Office is located in the Agriculture Extension Building.

HOURS OF OPERATION

Office:
Monday – Friday
8am – 4:30pm

Material Recovery Sites:
Open 5 days a week, closed Wed. and Sun.
6:30am – 6:30pm

Sat hours:
8:00am – 6:00pm

Avery County Transfer Station/Landfill
Monday – Friday
8am – 4:30pm
Sat hours: 9:00am - 1:00pm

MATERIAL RECOVERY SITE LOCATIONS

There are seven (7) Material Recovery Sites (MRS) in Avery County:

Elk Park MRS
4201 Elk Park Hwy
(5 miles north of Banner Elk on Hwy 194)

Banner Elk MRS
2028 Balm Hwy
(2 miles north of Banner Elk on Hwy 194)

Altamont MRS
6717 Linville Falls Hwy
(2 miles south of Crossnore on US 221)

Linville MRS
3070 Newland Hwy
(3 miles south of Newland on NC 181)

Plumtree MRS
182 Pancake Rd.
(Just off US 19E, Plumtree)

Beech Mountain MRS
33 Buckeye Lake Rd.
(Just off Buckeye Lake Rd, Beech Mountain)

Three Mile MRS
175 Prison Camp Rd.
(Just off ThreeMile Rd, Green Valley/Ingalls)

Avery County Transfer Station/Landfill
2175 Brushy Creek Rd
(2 miles east of US 19E Hwy, Ingalls)

The Solid Waste Department also operates a Construction and Demolition landfill located off US 19E Hwy just before the Mitchell County line. Turn onto Brushy Creek Rd, travel to the road's end. At the gate turn left to enter the landfill.

The transfer station accepts a variety of waste including the following:

Household trash

Wood debris

Scrap tires

Scrap metal

Automotive batteries

Junked cars.
