Department of Social Services

The mission of Avery County Department of Social Services is to be an advocate for and protector of the young, disabled, and aged citizens of Avery County.  To be an agency that works as a team to administer services and public assistance programs in an efficient, timely, consistent, and professional manner.

Avery County DSS Board Meetings are held the second Monday of each Month at 4:00 PM in the Commissioner's Board Room in the Avery County Administrative Building at 175 Linville Street, Newland NC.

The Crisis Intervention Energy Program is going on now.If you are out or nearly out of heating fuel, or if you have a delinquent notice on your electric bill, come by the Avery County Department of Social Services at 175 Linville St., Newland, NC and pick up an application or call 828-733-8230 to apply.  Someone in your home MUST have a health related condition that could be LIFE THREATENING without heat.

Applications are available in the Main Hallway for programs; a DROP BOX will be available to return applications/verifications to the agency; Interviews will be conducted by telephone with a signed application.  If you have any questions or need information, you may call 828-733-8230 during normal business hours.
