The Veterans Services Office aids veterans in obtaining the maximum benefits to which they are entitled through the Division of Veterans’ Affairs. This includes aid in obtaining copies of DD-214s, medical records, and other documents required in the application process. Also provided is up-to-date information pertaining to the benefits provided. This information is available to veterans, widows, or the children of veterans. Aid in the completion of health care forms, service-connected compensation claims, death pensions, burial benefits, and educational benefits is also available.
INFORMATION CONCERNING DISABLED VETERANS PROPERTY TAX EXCLUSION
This program excludes up to the first $45,000 of the appraised value of the permanent residence of an HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERAN who has a TOTAL AND PERMANENT DISABILITY THAT IS SERVICE CONNECTED or who receives benefits for specially adapted housing under 38 U.S.C. 2101. There is no age or income limitation for this program. This benefit is also available to the unmarried surviving spouse of an HONORABLY DISCHARGED DISABLED VETERAN. See G.S. 105-277.1C for the full text of the statute. The application may be obtained from the county tax department and it must be filed with the county assessor by June 1.
